Are you ready to take the leap and achieve a healthy, beautiful smile? Braces as an excellent investment to improve your oral health and self-esteem; however, it’s normal to have a few apprehensions about the road ahead. There isn’t any reason to worry about how your mouth and teeth will feel with braces. Here’s what you can expect while on your journey to a straight smile.

Getting Your Braces

When the big day finally arrives to have your braces put on your teeth, you won’t feel any pain, but there may be some slight discomfort. You’ll need to hold your mouth open for long intervals to allow your orthodontist to place your brackets and wires. The overall process will include:

  • Drying your teeth.
  • Applying glue.
  • Attaching the brackets to the center of each tooth.
  • Connecting the arch wires through the brackets.

First Week of Wearing Braces

The first week of having your braces will be a bit of an adjustment period as your teeth get used to the treatment. Your mouth may feel achy as your teeth start to align from the low-grade continual pressure that’s applied to them. Although it won’t be painful, it can be a little annoying, but it’s a sure way to know your braces are already working.

If you experience any discomfort, there are several ways you can alleviate it, such as:

  • Use an over-the-counter pain reliever.
  • Rinse your mouth with warm saltwater.
  • Stick to soft foods until your discomfort subsides.
  • Avoid acidic foods and drinks.

If you develop any mouth sores, you can help your mouth adjust to them by:

  • Apply an orthodontic wax to cover the metal area that’s causing irritation.
  • Apply an over-the-counter oral anesthetic to the painful soft tissue, like the inside of your cheek.

Adjustment Appointments

You’ll need to see your orthodontist regularly for adjustments. These appointments typically include:

  • Bending the arch wire into a different position.
  • Replacing the arch wires.
  • Attaching elastic rubber bands to the hooks on your braces.

After an adjustment, it’s normal to have some discomfort for a few days, but you can manage it using the home remedies that are listed above.

First Six Months

Within a few months, you may not even notice your braces in your mouth. Your new oral hygiene routine will become a habit as you brush and floss around the brackets and wires. You’ll be used to the dietary changes you’ve had to make while feeling certain you’re on your way to having the healthy, straight smile you deserve.

Your orthodontist will address your concerns and explain the entire process, so you can feel confident you’re making the best decision for your smile.
