Traditionally, parents can expect their child to start orthodontic treatment for crooked teeth when they’re around 12 years old and have a good mixture of adult and “baby” teeth. But did you know that pre-orthodontic treatment can go a long way towards helping your son or daughter correct the causes of crooked teeth and possibly even avoid the need for braces in the first place? This is exactly what Myofunctional Orthodontics and Myobraces® hope to accomplish, and we’re proud to offer these state-of-the-art solutions here at DeMaio Orthodontics. Please contact us in Northampton, MA, Greenfield, MA, or Amherst, MA to schedule an initial consultation with Dr. DeMaio.
While braces focus on correcting crooked teeth, they don’t actually address the underlying causes that lead to this orthodontic problem in the first place. Misalignments can be caused by abnormal jaws or genetics, but these cases only represent a small portion of overall patients. Instead, myofunctional habits like the following are responsible for the vast majority of incorrect dental and facial development:
Chronic allergies, untreated asthma, and a regular open mouth posture can also contribute to improper jaw development over these important early years.
The use of Myobrace is very simple – it doesn’t require a child to wear braces or any other overcomplicated orthodontic appliance for 24 hours a day. Instead, the appliance only needs to be placed in the mouth for one to two hours during the day and also be worn during sleep. Combined with a few simple exercises, these efforts are all it takes in most cases for dramatic, positive changes to occur in a child’s smile.
Myobrace is suitable for a wide range of orthodontic concerns, and it will be most effective when worn by children from the ages of 5 to 15.
