Uniform teeth contribute to better oral health, create stronger bites, and (of course) lead to a stronger sense of self-esteem. If you or your loved one is ready to take the plunge with braces and finally correct those frustrating gaps and misalignments, you’ve certainly come to the right place here at DeMaio Orthodontics. Dr. DeMaio uses only the highest quality brackets and wires, and no materials are EVER recycled from case to case. To schedule a one-on-one consultation, please contact one of our three orthodontic office locations in Amherst, Northampton, and Greenfield.
Surprisingly enough, traditional braces aren’t always the first step of a patient’s orthodontic treatment plan! Dr. DeMaio may determine that Phase One Pediatric Orthodontics is the right starting point for young smiles instead. By getting a head start, we can minimize bite dysfunction/severely misaligned teeth and even possibly help your loved one avoid the need for in-depth orthodontic treatment down the road.
Every Phase One treatment plan is specifically designed around the unique child’s age and their current stage of dental development. It may involve the use of fixed orthodontic appliances, removable appliances, space maintainers, or guided intervention for “bad habits” like chronic thumb/finger sucking. Once Phase One ends, most children then progress to traditional braces.
Along with diet and exercise, getting quality sleep on a consistent basis is absolutely essential to someone’s long-term overall health. However, for many children, their oral cavity develops in such a way that it naturally gives them a narrow airway. As a result, they’re not able to breathe effectively during sleep, which can drastically lower their sleep quality. This can lead to a person feeling chronically exhausted, having focus problems, and especially for children, it can even make them hyper. In fact, many cases of ADD/ADHD can actually be attributed to sleeping issues!
Airway orthodontics is an approach in which Dr. DeMaio guides the development of a child’s teeth in jaws in order to give them an open and unobstructed airway, enabling them to breathe and rest easy during sleep. For younger patients, this can be accomplished with Phase One Pediatric Orthodontics or traditional braces along with other appliances designed to widen the jaw.
Traditional braces have been around for many years, and their effectiveness when it comes to correcting even the most severe orthodontic concerns is unquestioned. Children and adults alike are great candidates for this reliable treatment plan.
Construction-wise, braces have three distinct components. First, there are the brackets, which are directly bonded onto the surface of teeth; each bracket will have unique characteristics depending on its position and the goals Dr. DeMaio is hoping to accomplish with its placement. Once the foundation is in place, it’s time to add the catalyst – the archwire. Your orthodontic wire is attached to the brackets while bent. As it returns to its original shape, it will apply a consistent amount of pressure to the teeth and shift them towards their desired alignment. Finally, elastics will connect the brackets and archwire(s), and they come in a variety of fun and neutral colors that our patients can choose from.
Many patients dream of achieving a straighter, more attractive smile, only to hit the brakes hard when they realize that they’ll need to commit to years of wearing noticeable metal braces. For older patients who prioritize aesthetics, Dr. DeMaio has other, more image-friendly orthodontic options available, such as clear/ceramic braces.
Clear/ceramic braces have all the same components as traditional braces, including brackets, wires, and elastics. The big difference? They’re all either tooth-colored or clear in nature, which means that they blend in very well with your natural smile.
Our practice uses Clarity by 3m Unitek brackets, which is a brand that’s well-known for its low-profile appearance. The orthodontic wire will attach into place over these brackets and exert consistent pressure to shift teeth into the ideal positions. Before choosing clear/ceramic braces, it is important for patients to remember that certain components of this orthodontic system will be more prone to discoloration over time, so we encourage you to take it easy on the coffee, wine, and tea. We also strongly recommend taking a break from smoking.
It wasn’t very long ago that bulky orthodontic headgear was the only option available for patients whose bites needed significant correction. At DeMaio Orthodontics, we’re happy to offer a much subtler and more effective alternative: the Carriere Distalizer! This modern device steadily pushes teeth as needed to correct severe cases of overbites and underbites, and it doesn’t require any natural teeth to be prematurely removed from the mouth.
